Answer
Health and Social Care Trusts are not commissioned to provide travel vaccinations as they are outside of the scope of the routine immunisation schedule. In Northern Ireland, GPs are contracted to provide advice and some travel vaccines under the General Medical Services (GMS) contract.
Patients are entitled to be given advice about, and supplied with, vaccines for typhoid, cholera, polio, and infective hepatitis (hepatitis A) by their own GP and not be charged for supply, advice or administration.
For all other vaccines, practices can advise patients that they need to seek private provision, or, if the practice is content to provide vaccination, patients can be charged for these. These vaccines include hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, meningococcal vaccine, rabies, tick borne encephalitis and yellow fever.
There are no plans to review or expand the travel vaccines offered under the GMS contract.
