Answer
As part of my public consultation on a proposed legislative approach to improving safety around buses during boarding and alighting, the Department has considered a range of measures designed to create a temporary safety zone around stationary buses. The consultation opened on 26 March and will run until 21 May 2026.
The consultation (Safer Journeys to School: Consultation on overtaking and passing buses) provides an opportunity for individuals, families, stakeholders and organisations to share views and evidence to help inform the programme’s next steps.
My Department is also currently taking forward a review on a number of speed related matters, including 20mph speed limits, which is open for consultation. Further consideration on the use of both temporary and permanent 20mph zones will be taken on completion of the consultation.
