Answer

My Department has a formal link with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) under which NICE Clinical Guidelines are reviewed locally for their legal and policy applicability here, and where found to be applicable, they are endorsed for implementation within Health and Social Care (HSC) organisations. NICE Clinical Guideline CG174 - Intravenous fluid therapy in adults in hospital was endorsed by my Department for implementation in July 2014.

The former HSCB, in collaboration with Trusts established a regional Task and Finish Group which identified the recommendations which would have the greatest impact on patient care and subsequently prioritised these for implementation.

The following priorities were identified and individual subgroups were established to take forward implementation:

Education and training – medical, nursing and pharmacy

Development of a Fluid Management Chart

Development of an Audit Tool

The work of these groups has now been completed. However, the agreed action plan has resource implications which has not yet been secured.
