Answer

The NI Climate Commissioner will play a prominent role in overseeing and reporting on the commitments made of all Departments in the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.

TEO officials have taken forward significant policy development work on options for establishing the office of the Climate Commissioner.

We will consider these options in the weeks ahead to determine the most appropriate way to progress with the establishment of the office, and the appointment of an NI Climate Commissioner.

The timescale for the appointment of a Commissioner will be established once the necessary duties and powers of the office have been agreed.
